Carter played high school baseball in Houston at Lamar. He was an all-state shortstop his senior year, finishing second in the city with a .478 batting average. In college, he spent his first two years at Alvin Community College, where he was a sophomore pre-season All-American. He played on the #1 nationally ranked 1997 Texas Tech team his junior year and finished his senior year at Sam Houston State, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
Out of college, Carter coached the Columbia Angels 18 and under select baseball team for seven years. During this time, his team won two national AAU titles. Current major leaguers he has coached include Josh Beckett, Jeff Niemann and Garrett Mock.
Carter was the youth activities coordinator at The Houstonian from 1999 – 2007. His duties included running and organizing the summer sports camps, weekly sports classes, basketball leagues and private lessons. Currently, Carter gives private baseball lessons, runs the after school sports program at The Fay School and organizes and runs sports birthday parties and summer baseball and sports camps.
